Sew a warm, stylish winter set using simple shapes and cozy fabric.

Winter sewing doesn’t have to be complicated—especially when you can make your own scarf, mittens, and matching hood with just a few rectangles and curved shapes. This DIY winter set is excellent for beginners, budget-friendly, and perfect for stash-busting fleece, sherpa, sweater knit, or flannel.

Whether you're sewing for yourself, a family member, or to stock your handmade shop on Hostinger, this simple pattern-free project creates a professional-looking set that feels warm, soft, and handmade with love.

🍂 Materials You’ll Need

1–1½ yards of fleece, sweater knit, sherpa, sweatshirt knit, or flannel

Matching thread

Pins or clips

Fabric scissors or rotary cutter

A ruler or measuring tape

Optional: lining fabric (flannel, satin, fleece) for extra warmth

🧣 Part 1: How to Sew the Scarf (Beginner-Friendly)

Cutting

Cut one rectangle:

10–12" wide

60–70" long (shorter or longer based on height)

For a lined scarf, cut a second rectangle the same size.

Sewing the Scarf

Unlined version

Simply fold the edges under ½" and topstitch all around.

OR leave edges raw if using fleece.

Lined reversible version

Place right sides together.

Stitch all the way around, leaving a 4" turning gap.

Turn right-side out and topstitch.

That’s it — the scarf is done!

🧤 Part 2: How to Sew the Mittens (No Pattern Needed)

These mittens are soft, shaped like classic winter mittens, and can be lined or unlined.

Step 1: Trace Your Hand

Place your hand on the fabric with fingers together (classic mitten shape).

Trace around your hand, adding ½–¾" seam allowance.

Step 2: Cut the Pieces

Cut 4 pieces for each mitten:

2 outer mitten pieces

2 lining pieces (optional)

Step 3: Sew the Mitten

Place your two outer mitten pieces right sides together.

Sew around the curved edges, leaving the wrist opening.

If lining:

Sew lining pieces the same way.

Insert lining into outer mitten.

Sew or bind the wrist edge.

Step 4: Finish the Wrist

Choose one:

Fold wrist edge under and topstitch.

Add elastic for a snug fit.

Add a cuff from rib knit or fleece.

Now you have warm, handmade mittens that match your scarf beautifully.

🧥 Part 3: Add an Optional Hood to the Scarf

(A winter favorite — stylish and incredibly warm!)

This is where the set becomes a real showstopper.

Cutting the Hood

Cut two hood-shaped pieces by:

Taking a hoodie you own.

Folding it in half.

Tracing the hood shape onto fabric.

Adding ½" seam allowance.

OR you can cut:

1 rectangle 14" × 11" (adult)

Curve the top back corner into a hood shape

Cut 2 pieces (outer) and 2 pieces (lining, optional).

Sewing the Hood

Place outer hood pieces right sides together.

Sew the back curved seam.

Repeat for lining if using one.

Place lining inside the outer hood and finish the front opening with:

A folded hem

A binding strip

Or a facing

Attach the Hood to the Scarf

Fold the scarf in half to find the center.

Match the center of the hood base to the scarf's center point.

Pin the hood to the scarf edge.

Stitch securely in place.

Topstitch for strength.

Now you’ve made a hooded scarf, also known as a “scoodie.”

It's warm, fashionable, and perfect for craft fairs.
