Turn fabric scraps into stylish, stretchy scrunchie key fobs in minutes.
Scrunchie key fobs are one of those delightful sewing projects that check all the boxes—easy, fast, colorful, and helpful. They’re perfect for sewists who want to use fabric scraps while creating something practical. These soft, stretchy key fobs can be worn on the wrist, clipped to a purse, or added to a backpack for a pop of personality.
What You Need
Fabric strips cut to 2.5" wide × 10–12" long (shorter length creates a tight scrunch; longer creates more gathers)
1-inch elastic, cut to 6–7 inches
Key fob hardware in your preferred finish (gold, silver, rose gold, black)
Safety pin or bodkin
Sewing machine
Optional: fusible interfacing for structure (not required)
How to Make the Long Scrunchie Key Fob
Cut the Fabric
Cut each strip to 2.5” wide and 10–12” long, depending on how tightly you want the fob gathered.
Sew the Tube
Fold the strip right sides together lengthwise.
Sew down the long edge using a ¼" seam allowance to form a narrow tube.
Turn Right Side Out
Use a safety pin or a turning tool to turn the tube right-side out.
Insert the 1-Inch Elastic.
Thread 6–7 inches of 1-inch elastic through the tube, then stitch the ends securely.
Close the Fabric Ends
Tuck raw edges inside by ¼", then top-stitch or hand-stitch closed.
Attach Key Fob Hardware
Place the gathered end into the key fob clamp and press firmly with pliers (protect the key fob with fabric to avoid scratches).
You now have a sleek, elongated scrunchie key fob that complements your style.
