The Satiny Feel and Comfort of a Satin Pillowcase

I've been sewing satin pillowcases lately—just for me—and let me tell you, they're one of the best creature comforts I’ve added to my bed. I feel like a princess.

I sew them just like any regular pillowcase, but I love adding a personal touch: a floral cotton print or brocade accent right at the opening. That little detail makes them feel elegant and finished. I cut the floral accent 9 inches wide, fold it in half, and topstitch it to the edge of the pillowcase. It’s simple to do and gives the pillowcase a polished look with only one side seam. My finished satin pillowcase measures 33" X 19."

Satin pillowcases feel cool on hot summer nights and cozy and warm during the winter. They’re one of those projects that are incredibly easy to make and bring a great deal of comfort. It only takes one yard of satin per pillowcase, and I cut mine on the fold so there are just two side seams to sew up. Easy peasy!

These are not just soft and beautiful—they’re also part of my anti-aging routine. Satin and silk pillowcases are gentle on the skin and hair. Satin and silk also make beautiful scrunchies that won't damage your hair. They don’t tug or crease like cotton can, which makes them a wise choice for reducing lines on your face, neck, and chest while you sleep. If you’re curious about the beauty benefits, I go into detail in my eBook, Your Path to the Fountain of Youth. It’s full of tips like this to help you keep that youthful glow.

I like to sew up a half dozen at a time and keep them stored in my linen closet. They wash and dry beautifully—no need to iron them, either. And best of all, they make lovely, luxurious gifts. I’ve sewn these for friends and family who are still raving about how much they love them.

Whether you make one or a dozen, satin pillowcases are something I highly recommend. They’re soft, elegant, and sewn with love—what more could anyone want?

Stay beautiful, stay youthful... and happy sewing.
